Galway band puts spotlight on refugees

GALWAY band Rofi James have used documentary footage from a refugee camp in Greece in the music video for their new single; Fool For Your Love. Filming for this video – made by Dublin-based production company, the Reelists – was carried out over six days in three migrant camps across Athens and the island of Lesvos.

There was approximately 60,000 people seeking refuge in these camps at the time of filming, most of whom were escaping the war in Syria. The mixture of live footage from the camps and interviews with their resident’s makes for very emotive viewing. However, when combined with the upbeat rock ‘n’ roll sound of the Galway duo there is definitely a lot of hope in this video too.

“Myself and Ronan wanted to do something different for the video for FFYL (Fool For Your Love). We approached Tommy and Kevin, from The Reelists, after we saw their other videos and we liked their work,” explained James Murray, Co-founder of Rofi James.

“They suggested that we take a different approach for the video and shoot a documentary style video and give the people affected by the refugee crisis a platform to tell their stories and highlight the issue,” he added.

The most significant achievement of the collaboration be tween Rofi James and the Reelists is that it has highlighted the refugee crisis in Europe in a more relatable way to younger audiences. The song is extremely catchy and is sure to get plenty of air time, which can only help the message the band are trying to spread.

Rónán Ó Flaithearta(Rofi) and Jamie Murray (James) first established themselves on the Galway music scene when they won the 2012 NUIG Witless Music Award. A year later the Galwegians were crowned the 2013 iRadioiRock winners.

The single will be available across all main streaming sites this Friday, with an official launch in The Loft Venue, Gal- way, on November 19.
